How to Set Your College Student Up for a Strong Start ThisSemester

College student organizing planner and syllabus before semester start

The first two weeks of a semester feel low-stakes syllabus week, light reading, no exams yet. That's exactly why they matter more than almost any other stretch of the term. The habits (or lack of them) a

student builds in week one tend to be the habits they're still running on by week twelve, when the workload has tripled and there's no time left to build a system from scratch.

Why the first two weeks set the tone

Every syllabus that gets handed out in the first week contains the entire semester's worth of deadlines, all at once. A student who reads it, maps the big dates, and builds a routine around it starts the semester ahead. A student who skims it and moves on is quietly setting themselves up to be surprised by a project in week nine that was actually assigned in week one. The gap between those two students rarely shows up until it's already a problem.

A few things that actually help, starting now

Get every syllabus into one place. Not four separate PDFs never opened again — one calendar, with every exam, paper, and project deadline for the whole semester visible at once. Build a weekly rhythm before classes get heavy. A set time to plan the week, ideally the same day and time every week, makes the routine automatic instead of something that has to be decided fresh each time. Identify the hardest class early. Almost every semester has one course that's going to require more structure than the others. Figuring out which one that is in week one, instead of week seven, changes how the whole semester goes.

Set up a check-in system before it's needed. Waiting until a student is already behind to add structure means playing catch-up. Starting the semester with a recurring check-in means problems get caught while they're still small.

Where EFB fits into this

This is exactly the window we recommend families start coaching, and it's also why spots fill up early each semester. In the first one to two weeks, we build a custom weekly calendar with your student based on their actual syllabi, set a recurring session time, and start reviewing their real Canvas or Blackboard account together so we're catching potential issues in week two, not discovering them at midterms. With that being said we do take clients throughout the entire semester depending on avaibility.

You get a written recap after every session, so you know how the semester is actually going from the very start. See our packages or read how the process works on our FAQ page.

If your student is heading into a new semester, now is the easiest time to put structure in place, well before the workload picks up. Schedule a free intake call to get started.
